nanant...don't let her feed that BS to you...I keep mine on 58-59 and still paid all that money. I do have a 4700 sq feet to warm but still never in the 9 years have my bills ever been that high. I mostly microwave so it's sure not from cooking. LOL

I have a kerosene heater with (4) 5gallon jugs in the garage. I only turn it on when it gets really chilly. It only takes 1/2 hour to heat up the house, then I shut it off and the furnace circulates that heat for hourse. Usually it take the chill out of the house for the rest of the day. I have a rather larger house too, ranch style. Some winters I'll use 2 jugs (10 gallons), this year I just now finished off one jug and don't expect to need the heater again until next year.   I only have the 4 just in case of power outage for emergency use when the furnace would be doing most of the work.

Heat in the winter time is #1 for survival...  You can use candles for light and melt snow (if needed) for water. (yuk)  And in REAL cold weather you can stack your frozen goods from the freezer in the garage. Same for refrigerator items.  In fact right now I have 5 12can cases of pop (soda) in my built-on garage. I can pick any flavor I want and they are all very cold and waiting for me. Summer will be different of course. I'll probably give up soda for summer and drink more water. I have a really good in-line water filter that gives the greatest water ever..
